While recently traveling to New York City, I made it a mission to explore a mix of tried-and-true favorites and new happy hour spots. The lineup included some repeat visits and a few first-timers...some good, a couple great, and all worth sharing. I’ll also sprinkle in a few standout dining experiences from the trip.

🍸Happy Hour #1: Paris Bar

This was easily one of the highlights.

From the moment we walked in, the hospitality stood out...friendly staff, comfortable seating, and an overall welcoming vibe. A strong start to the trip.

What I ordered:

  • Espresso Martini ($15) – rich, smooth, with a beautifully thick foam

  • Martini & Fries ($21) – a simple but elevated pairing done right

  • Le Méridien Cosmo ($15) – perfectly balanced and a great finisher

Everything, from the host to the final sip, was dialed in. This is absolutely a repeat stop for future NYC visits.

Bonus: They accept InKind, which can be a huge win if you’re stacking deals (especially with discounted Costco gift cards). If we didn’t already have dinner plans, I would’ve stayed to explore more of the menu.

🥩Dinner: Bourbon Steak New York (Inside JW Marriott Essex House New York)

A solid steakhouse experience with a few quirks.

Service was attentive, and while my filet initially came out over-charred, the team recovered well...quick correction and some extra sides made up for it.

One surprising downside: a nearby guest was watching videos with volume on. Instead of addressing it, we were moved. Not exactly what you expect at this level.

That said, the food rebounded nicely, and their take on “bread service” (fries instead) was a fun, unexpected touch.

👠Repeat Stop: Shoe Bar at Nordstrom

A consistent go-to.

$14 signature cocktails in the middle of a department store? Hard to beat. The drinks delivered as always, though service leaned a bit standoffish this time.

Still, there’s something uniquely fun about sipping a cocktail surrounded by designer shoes.

🍽️Lunch Tasting: Le Pavillon

A refined multi-course experience with some highs and a few misses.

Standouts:

  • Bread & butter (don’t overlook this—exceptional)

  • Grilled Avocado & Duo of Tuna

  • Lobster Torchietti

  • Wagyu Flatiron

  • Noisette Chocolat (a strong finish)

Miss:

  • Seabass – good components, but the skin brought an overpowering fishy note (confirmed by staff as a recurring issue)

At $120 for six courses, it’s not unreasonable by NYC standards, but overall value is debatable.

🍸Happy Hour #2: Dante West Village

$10 martinis in NYC? That alone earns attention.

I tried:

  • Vesper Martini

  • The Dante Martini

Both were solid and spirit-forward (very Sir Shaker-approved), though on the smaller side. One drawback, many of the martinis appeared pre-batched and simply poured, which takes away from the craft experience.

Still, for the price point, it’s hard to complain.

🍹Happy Hour #3: Baires Grill

Another standout...and one I’ll absolutely return to.

The bartender was fantastic, and everything we tried hit the mark.

Favorites:

  • Watermelon Bliss ($10) – light, refreshing, perfectly balanced

  • Golden Hour ($10) – a smooth rum cocktail without being overly sweet

  • Patatas Bravas ($10) + Empanadas ($11) – both excellent

Great energy, great service, great value.

🥂Late Night Stop: Quality Meats

A non-negotiable NYC tradition.

  • Ketel Martini ($21) – strong and well-made

  • Caviar Sliders ($18) – as good as ever (had to order two)

Between chatting with the bartender and a fellow guest seated next to me at the bar, this turned into a longer stop than planned, which wasn’t ideal for the next day’s flight, but worth it.

🍽️ Honorable Mentions

Marseille: Perfect pre-Broadway dinner spot.Prix-fixe ($59):

  • Soupe à l’Oignon (just okay)

  • Trout Meunière (excellent)

  • Profiteroles (worth it)

Would absolutely return before a show.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor: A must-stop in Chinatown. The soup dumplings are consistently outstanding.

🥃Final Pour

This trip delivered a great mix of elevated cocktails, solid happy hour deals, and memorable dining. A couple of surprises along the way, but overall, NYC continues to be one of the best cities to explore through a glass.

If you’re building out your next NYC itinerary...start with Paris Bar and Baires Grill. You won’t miss.
